BLDC Pump Controller Design Requirements for OEM Projects

A BLDC pump controller must be tailored to the pump load, liquid environment, operating duty cycle, and failure modes. A fan controller approach cannot simply be reused without validating these application-specific conditions.

Define the pump operating envelope

Provide voltage, power, current, speed range, starting load, liquid type, ambient temperature, target life, and expected duty cycle. These details guide drive topology, thermal design, protection thresholds, and component selection.

Protection and control functions

Consider dry-run behavior, stall protection, blocked-rotor response, over-current protection, voltage limits, temperature limits, speed feedback, and alarm or communication outputs. The priority of each feature depends on the product application.

Validation before production

  • Test start-up under realistic fluid and load conditions.
  • Run endurance testing at expected voltage and temperature extremes.
  • Verify protection thresholds and restart behavior.
  • Define ICT, FCT, and aging criteria for mass production.

Prepare a productive engineering brief

Share a pump sample, motor data, use case, target market, required approvals, and volume forecast. This gives the controller team the evidence needed to design for performance and manufacturability.

PUMP CONTROLLER INTENT

Turn the pump load and failure modes into a production-ready controller brief.

Share voltage, current, pump curve, startup condition, feedback method, liquid and ambient conditions, protection response, target life, and volume plan before selecting a controller reference.
